Musician mental health is in crisis. Substance misuse, suicide, depression, and anxiety are rampant in the professional music life. Female musicians are 70% more likely to commit suicide than any other population group. Male musicians are 20% more likely. Musicians are 38% more likely to die young than any other professional group. Support Life And Music (S.L.A.M.) is a non-profit organization fighting back for musicians' life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.
ARTIST VOICES. SLAM: Music Survival Guide podcast and accompanying articles have featured major music stars and music industry VIPs talking about how to survive the challenges of the music lifestyle and music business. Season featured icons like Darryl "DMC" McDaniels (ex-Run DMC), Neil Giraldo (Pat Benatar), David Ellefson (ex-Megadeth), Monique Powell (Save Ferris), and many others. COMMUNITY. We have partnered with a number of incredible organizations who are helping to increase awareness, including Backline, the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM), Arizona Bike Week, PHXMF. The S.L.A.M. website features an ever-growing list of direct help resources. 🎜
THE SLAM AWARDS. In August 2026, Support Life And Music will host its first ever Award show, recognizing individuals whose actions have benefited mental health, especially for musicians and industry workers. Media sensation, Cathy Rankin (Metal Hall of Fame, Bubba Bash, Montrose Remembered), will host the event. We can’t give everything away yet, but our first class includes music legends - - as well as lesser-known, widely revered figures who’ve made a difference.
